If you've been doing research SEO then you may have heard the term "backlinks". Backlinks are links that go from other people's websites back to your website. The secret sauce to Google's algorithm is backlinks. The more relevant and credible websites that link to your website the more relevant and credible Google finds your website to be.
There are two types of backlinks you should be aware of. The first is called a "follow" and the second is called a "no follow". A follow link is really any regular old link to your website. Unless someone goes out of there way to specify a link to your website from there's in a "no follow" it's going to be considered a "follow" link.
Follow and no follow links have to do with the way Google views the information they gather when your website is crawled. Follow links are more valuable than no follow links because they pass some of that precious credibility from one page to another. No follow links on the other hand are designed not to pass that "link juice" to your page.
No follow links are typically used by advertisers and websites that allow for user generated content. For example the links you get from a Youtube video are "no follow". In this way those links don't pass information that greatly effects the credibility and relevance of your web page. This however doesn't mean no follow links are worthless. Another big part of Google's algorithm is checking to make sure the links profile of your website appears natural. All websites should have a good mix of both follow and no follow links.
