WebStarts Team Visits Honduras

As some of you may know we at WebStarts have been providing humanitarian support to children in Honduras now for several years. Last week we were able to go for a visit. We spend our time focusing on children in some of the poorest communities bringing food, clothes, and other basic necessities.

We also visit the children's ward of the local public hospital where many children suffer from the lack of basic pain medications. Often times medical treatment involves nothing more than a bed without a pillow. Family members must stay at the child's side to ensure they'll be fed and receive proper medication. Most families cannot afford the medications their children need to ease their suffering and neither can the hospital. So it's not unusual to hear the moans of children in pain throughout the halls. Although most of our time there is spent praying for the children and distributing things like stuffed animals we're making an effort to bring medical supplies. Unfortunately corruption and red tape make that a more complicated process than one might think.

Our home base in Honduras is the community center we're funding. It acts as a safe haven for many kids throughout the day. There we have established a day care. Single mothers are an epidemic in Honduras and the free day care provides them a safe place to leave their children during the day so they can work. In addition to the day care there is a computer lab, english, classes, music classes, and a church.

Knowing english is an especially valuable skill in Honduras. There is a small middle class in Honduras and the chances of someone entering that class are greatly improved if they can speak english.

In addition to teaching kids at the community center we've also created a program to help kids attend school. Children want to attend school in Honduras but they are not allowed if they don't have a uniform and school supplies. Last year we paid for school supplies for 20 kids. This year we're hoping to expand on that number.

Although the task is bigger than anyone person or organization can handle we're making a difference in one life at a time in Honduras. I thank all of those who do business with WebStarts. Without you we could not afford to do all the things we're doing in Honduras.
