Search Engine Optimization_ All About Backlinks

If you really want to start moving up the search rankings you're going to need a lot of relevant backlinks. Backlinks are links from other sites to yours. Google assigns a value to every page on the web. When another page links to your page it's similar to voting for your website. Google essentially tallies up these votes and determines where your site should rank for a given search term. However - unlink in a political election not all votes are equal. Website that receive significant traffic and are found significantly relevant to your industry carry more value than other links.

For example_ Let's say you're selling widgets and a popular blogger who blogs about widget companies does a review of your product and provides a link to your site. Google will look at this as being a highly relevant backlink (vote) for your website when concerning widgets. This will be even more obvious to Google if the word "widget" is included in the link itself. So let's say the link from the blog review of your widget company is labeled "a company who makes widgets". Google will find this link to be a vote specifically for the keywords included in the link. (i.e. widgets in this example)

The key to moving up the rankings is to get as many of these high powered, highly relevant links to your website. By now you're thinking "that's great - how do I get those?". The best way to get backlinks is to steadily create highly original and useful content on your site. If you create something worth reading there is a good chance someone else will find it and want to link to it. It's also helpful to create links from your Youtube videos, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.
