Getting Started with SEO

SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization. Search Engine Optimization is the way you tweak a webpage in hopes of getting better ranking on search engines like Google. Google takes many factors in to account when ranking a website. In this article I'll address the most basic. These things are really the minimum you need to do in order to get good search ranking.

Keyword Targeting

All good SEO starts with keyword research. You have to know which keywords and phrases people are using to search for products and services like yours on the web. By targeting these keywords and phrases you'll be more likely to get good search engine ranking and drive the right kind of traffic to your website.

A good way to do keyword research is to make a list of keywords and phrases you would use to find your products and services online. Once you have that list try asking your friends and colleagues what they would enter into a search engine to find your products. Finally take your list of keywords and run them through the Google Keyword Planner. This will match your keywords with Google's algorithm. Google will then kickback a list of additional keywords you may have yet to consider. You'll then want to implement those keywords into the content of your webpages.

Page Title

Your most important keywords and phrases should be implemented into your page title. Your page title is the short description that appears in your browser tab. It also doubles as the title of your search engine listing. When looking over search results this will be the most obvious thing. An effective page title should not only include your most important keywords and phrases but also should make people want to click on your search result. Take care to write the page title in natural language - so as not to sound spammy.

Writing a page title with WebStarts is easy. All you need to do is open the webpage in the editor, click on file> page settings and then enter your page title in the field provided.

Page Description

When you look at a Google listing you'll see a paragraph of text displayed below the page title. This paragraph of text is typically not something that's displayed on the actual page but rather in the code of the page. The page description, like the title should include some of your most relevant keywords and phrases, be compelling enough to click, and be written in natural language as to avoid sounding spammy.

Implementing a page description can be a bit tricky if you don't know how to code. The information is usually found in the head of a webpage. However WebStarts makes editing your page description easy. Just open the page you would like to edit in the editor and choose the file> page settings option. From there you'll see a place where you can write a descriptive paragraph about your page.

Once you've completed these three steps you'll want to make sure your website is crawled by Google. If you manually submit your website to Google the process can take up to six weeks. Fortunately there's a way to speed up the process with Listing Express from WebStarts. Listing Express let's you bypass the normal wait times and gets you site listed with Google in a matter of hours.
