Don't Believe The Hype When It Comes To Web Design
I just read a blog post on one of our competitors websites and it's inspired me to write a little blog of my own. The blog was about thinking like a designer and went on to provide tips on how to make a website like a designer. After reading the article it's abundantly clear to me why so many people fail in business. There's just a lot of bad information out there.
The article started off by saying a key to good design was to minimize text. Obviously the less text you put on your page the cleaner it's going to look. However I challenge you to ask this question - "Why would someone come to your website in the first place?". Most likely to get information. If the goal of your site visitor is to get information and your goal is to display as little information as possible you're not creating the best experience for the site visitor and chances are you won't win them as a reader, lead, or customer.
There are things to keep in mind to ensure you're creating a decent looking website, but all web design should start with this question "What is the goal of your website?". Is the goal to win new leads and customers for your business? Its it to provide information? Is it a little bit of both? Whatever the case, by answering this question you'll be in a better position when making decision about your web design.
With all that being said here are the three most important things to keep in mind when designing your website...
1. Make your text readable.
Don't get overly creative with font colors. There are millions of websites on the web. You're only going to capture someone's attention for a moment. When they come to your website it needs to be easy to read. That means black fonts on a white background.
2. Include a headline at the top of your page.
Again, you've got seconds before someone clicks the back button. Make sure you put a headline at the top of the page that tells them they came to the right place. If they're looking for information about widgets your headline should read something like "5 facts about our widgets".
3. Have an obvious call to action.
Once someone has skimmed the information on your page they'll want to know what to do next. Don't let this be a mystery. If you want them to click on a sign up button make that large and keep it above the fold so they don't have to scroll down the page. The same applies to phone numbers or links.
These are the big three things you should do. Of course there are many other things you can do to make your website look great and be effective but just by implementing these three things you're going to have some success.
Coming up with new and creative ideas is hard. It's much easier to look around the web and copy something already created. But if you really want to have success online you need to be creating something original that's narrowly focused on your niche.
