10 Rules For Creating A Great Marketing Email

10 rules
Email marketing is still the best converting form of advertising but chances are it can be even better. Follow these 10 tips to creating a better email marketing campaign.

1. Use a familiar from name.

When people see emails fill up their inbox they skim the senders and subject lines to determine which are important and which are not. If your sending name is unrecognizable it could come off as spam. Especially if they don't recognize the email address itself or the company who is sending it.

If your a business be sure to send your emails from your website's domain name and use real names for your email sender. It's more likely your email will be read if there person who's receiving it recognizes who and where it came from.

2.  Write a compelling subject line.

If your subject line looks spammy you're just asking for that email to be sent straight to the trash. Come up with eye catching, subject lines that spark curiosity. One of the ways I come up with subject lines is by browsing recent Reddit article titles. They say things like "This is the one thing that can tank your business...". People get curious and click on those type of subject lines and article headlines.

3. Use replacement codes to address people by name.

Everybody likes to be addressed by name. Most email marketing apps will automate the process of addressing a person with the data you've collected about them. For example including their first name in the salutation.

4. Make it short and sweet.

If you write a long email with paragraph after paragraph of information don't expect people to read it. Many people will perceive they don't have the time and archive it, or send it to the trash. Get your point across quickly by making your emails short and to the point.

5. Use bold, highlight, and underline.

Instead of getting fixated on creating a perfectly eloquently written email, spend the time using bold, highlighting, and underline to draw attention to your main points. You don't need to have perfect grammar either. Just make sure you can communicate the big idea at a glance.

6. Use bullet points to communicate features and benefits.

Bullet points are a great way to break up the monotony of a page but don't get carried away. I recommend using three bullet points to convey the three biggest features or benefits to your product or service.  If you really want to stretch it, you can use four, but I wouldn't take it further than that.

7. Provide a clear call to action.

If you did everything right people are going to want to know what to do next. Don't keep them guessing. Include a clear call to action in your email surrounded by plenty of white space. This should be a button or blue underlined text (hyperlink).

8. Provide a sense of urgency.

The whole world is competing for eyeballs. If someone doesn't act on your email the moment they receive it, they'll most likely never respond to it. Give some extra incentive to take action by making your offer only for a limited time or quantity. If you don't like that method try offering them something extra if they respond now.

9. Let people reply to your email.

No matter how much preparation you make when marketing people still have questions and objections. Harness this information by letting people reply to your emails. Sending from a no reply address is a waste of an opportunity to increase engagement, and show your prospects there's a real person on the other end of your business.

10. Respond to the replies in a timely manner.

This goes along with the last point. When people reply to your emails respond to them right away to create that spur of the moment engagement. That, combined with the sense of urgency should be enough to lead to plenty more sales opportunities.
