5 Tips On How To Make Your Website Easier To Read

Recent studies show people are actually less likely to read a webpage that contains a lot of text. In fact, researchers found people would read more of the content on a page that has less content to read - than they would read on a page filled with text. In other words, less is more. Here are three tips you can use to make your webpages more readable. 1. Use bullet points. Most people are going to scan webpage for information as opposed to read every line of text. You're probably scanning this article now. That's why it's important to include bullet points. They help the reader locate the main points and quickly read through them. 2. Use a black font on a white background. There's a reason all books are essentially black text on a white background, it's easy to read. Don't be misguided by trying to make your website look overly cool. Black text on a white background may not be glamorous but it's easy on the eyes. 3. Write something a 10 year old can read. Whether you like it or not a lot of people don't read  higher than a third grade level. Studies show articles written at a college reading level or even a high school reading level are significantly less likely to be read. Don't be too embarrassed by this fact, consider all the people who don't speak english as a first language. One of the great things about the web is the way it connects people from around the world. 4. Choose a basic font. It's tempting to use overly creative fonts on your website but try to keep it to something basic and clear. If someone has to struggle to make out characters of text on your page, they'll likely skip it and move on. There's a reason Microsoft Word uses boring old Times New Roman as the default font. It's easy to read. Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, these are all good fonts to use on a website because they're easy on the eyes and web compatible (they're supported by most web browsers). 5. Use white space. White space is nothing more than areas you're leaving intentionally empty on a page. White space is a nice way to reduce the appearance of clutter on a page and prevent your reader from becoming overwhelmed. By surrounding your content with white space you draw the focus to the content you want someone to read. It also provides a better general appearance to your site.
